We discovered two important things many years ago; that drinking these wines from Rioja could be a wonderful experience and that the variety itself is well suited to the Clare Valley’s growing conditions and terroir.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis wine demonstrates the definitive Tempranillo characters of strawberry and cherry, in harmony with clove and cinnamon spice derived from 18 months ageing in new French oak hogsheads. Made with a strong influence of the greatest Old-World Tempranillos examples, the palate is juicy and savoury and is lower in alcohol than most Australian red wines.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"woocommerce-product-details__winemaking_notes additional_row\"\u003e\n\u003ch4 class=\"heading\"\u003eWinemaking Notes\u003c\/h4\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOn an exploratory trip to Spain to meet the winemakers and taste wines in Rioja, Tim met Isaac Muga, who decided to join us to work in Clare for vintage 2004. That same year, we planted 6.5 hectares of Tempranillo on a dry grown site just to the east of the winery. We named this unique site ‘Ladera’, Spanish for ‘slope’ or ‘hillside’ as it has a very valuable and beautiful steep easterly aspect.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDry-grown Clare Valley Tempranillo was fermented on skins for 13 days and then pressed, with all pressings being returned to the blend for structure and complexity. The wine spent 18 months in French oak barrels prior to blending, fining and bottling. Humid and cool conditions toward the end of vintage proved conducive to botrytis infection in this selected Riesling block in our Irelands vineyard, at one of the highest elevations in the central part of Clare Valley.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe level of infection has produced a luscious and  sweet wine with concentrated flavours of lemon, mandarin, dried apricots and marmalade balanced by a refreshing acidity on the palate.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003eCrisp natural acidity ensures the palate is not cloying or over-sweet. Sealed with a screw-cap closure, our Botrytis Riesling will continue to improve in bottle for a period of at least 10 years.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"woocommerce-product-details__growing_conditions additional_row\"\u003e\n\u003ch4 class=\"heading\"\u003eGrowing Conditions\u003c\/h4\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe viticulture team selected this block very early in the season, designated it to late harvest and left it untouched throughout the ripening period. A natural and clean development of the ‘Noble Rot’ infection took hold evenly throughout the block.\u003cbr\u003eThe grapes were hand harvested on the 21st of April 2023 ( almost two months after the Riesling for the classic Clare Valley dry style), crushed and pressed over a long period to maximize the extraction of the concentrated juice. By co-fermenting small parcels of outstanding dry-grown Cabernet Sauvignon with Malbec, we have produced a powerful, full bodied wine.  Two years maturation in French oak provides spice and balance to the wine, which is dominated by ripe blackcurrant, black cherry and violet flower aromas and flavours. A long ageing period between barrel and bottle prior to release has melded all wine components to further enhance the prestige of this wine. The wine spent a total of 24 months in a mix of new and second use French oak barrels before blending, fining and bottling in October 2021. A wine made in the best years only, the 2019 is showing what two of the most prized international varieties can deliver in a great vintage in the Clare Valley.
